NATALIA ALMADA WINS BEST DOCUMENTARY DIRECTOR AWARD AT SUNDANCE!

The 25th Sundance Film Festival culminated with a celebration recognizing the films that Festival juries and audiences selected for awards. Festival goers packed into the Park City Racquet Club for this special evening highlighting some of the 2009 Festival’s most original voices.

LPB would like to congratulate Natalia Almada, who was awarded the Directing Award: U.S. Documentary for the LPB funded documentary EL GENERAL, a film about the conflicting history the filmmaker inherited as the great-granddaughter of one of Mexico’s most controversial figures and the socio-economic injustice that has prevailed from the Revolution of 1910 to the present. EL GENERAL is a journey into her family’s past and an intimate portrait of Mexico then and now. A co-production with Altamura Films and ITVS in association with Latino Public Broadcasting.

LPB FUNDED ‘OUR DISAPPEARED’ SCREENING AT THE SANTA BARBARA INTL. FILM FESTIVAL

The 24th edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) presents its film line-up for 2009, featuring over 200 films including 21 World Premieres, 29 U.S. Premieres and a rich selection of films representing 41 countries. The Festival takes place over 11 days beginning Thursday, January 22, through Sunday, February 1, 2009.

OUR DISAPPEARED
Director: Juan Mandelbaum
Documentary/99 min

TOMORROW - January 28 at 10 a.m.
On Sunday, February 1 at 4 p.m.

OUR DISAPPEARED is a filmmaker’s personal search for the souls of friends who disappeared in Argentina during the 1976-1983 military dictatorship. The principal narrator is the filmmaker himself, Juan Mandelbaum, who returns to trace the fate of five friends. The pain of their absence and the lack of justice for many of the perpetrators continue to haunt the country. Each story shows different aspects of the horrors that befell them. The film also focuses on these young people’s dreams for a better society before they were taken away, and on the legacies that live on through their now grown surviving children. They show that there is hope even after such an enormous tragedy.

IN MEMORIAM: WOODY WICKHAM

It is with great sadness that I share the news of Woody Wickham's untimely death on January 18, 2009. Latino Public Broadcasting mourns the loss of a great friend and colleague. His strategic thinking and vision guided our work. His concern for human rights, for the environment, for public media, will live on in the many programs he helped create. We will miss him and remember him fondly.

Hasta siempre Woody! - y gracias por tu amistad, tus consejos, tu ejemplo!

I first met Woody in 1991, in Mexico, where we convened regional filmmakers to help us design a transnational fellowship program that the Rockefeller and MacArthur foundations jointly funded. Woody led the discussion, speaking in fluent Spanish, making us all feel welcome and inspiring everyone to think creatively. Many of those artists went on to work in such memorable films as Pan's Labyrinth and City of God. The fellowships the foundations awarded as a result of that program, from the indigenous filmmakers of Oaxaca to the favelas in Rio de Janeiro, helped bring the voices of the dispossessed to audiences around the world.

Woody was a strategic thinker who had an enormous impact on American philanthropy and public media. After I joined the MacArthur Foundation, Woody and I visited Los Angeles, a city still smoldering from the race riots, where we met with Latino leaders who were working with Black and Asian communities to address economic development. Woody's work in philanthropy always supported innovation and collaboration for the common good. As vice president and director of the General Program at the MacArthur Foundation, Woody developed grantmaking in support of National Public Radio; the PBS series Frontline, P.O.V. and Wide Angle, and many documentaries that brought diverse voices to PBS. That same commitment led him to graciously accept joining the Latino Public Broadcasting board of directors.

Over time, I had the privilege of becoming Woody's friend, and have wonderful memories of trekking across Montana, where he loved fly fishing, and the Swiss Alps, where his sister Diana lives. He taught me to love basketball, and we celebrated every slam dunk Michael Jordan scored for The Chicago Bulls. Massimo and I were fortunate to have him as our guest in Florida to celebrate the New Year. He enjoyed watching the sunset among fishermen and pelicans, and resting in our sunny garden, among his beloved monarch butterflies.

Woody endowed a fund at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum to establish what will be named the Woodward A. Wickham Butterfly Garden in his memory. His friends and colleagues will lead an effort in his memory to substantially build the garden's endowment. Gifts in his memory can be sent to the endowment of the Woodward A. Wickham Butterfly Garden at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, 2430 N. Cannon Drive, Chicago, IL 60614.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: A CLASS APART
On PBS Monday, February 23rd, 2009

(Please check local listings)

Producer/Director: Carlos Sandoval; Co-Producer: Peter Miller
Genre: Documentary
Length: 1 Episode/60 Minutes

A CLASS APART tells the little known story of how a band of underdog Mexican-American lawyers take their case, Hernandez v. Texas, all the way to the Supreme Court and win the first decision to begin dismantling Jim Crow – issued two weeks before Brown v. Board of Education. This one-hour historical documentary is more than the story of a case – it's the story of a people. It uses the Hernandez case as a through-line to shed light on the under-reported history of systematic discrimination faced by Mexican-Americans in the Southwest, their early civil rights struggle, and to explore cutting-edge issues of racial politics and identity among Latinos. For more information about the program, please visit the American Experience website at: www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/.
